Save As RTF File

Your instructor may ask that you submit homework or share other documents in Rich Text Format so that they can be opened and edited by all users.

  • Any word processing program can open and read a Rich Text Format file.
  • Any word processing program can create a Rich Text Format file.
  • All word processing programs have the ability to save and open a document as an RTF file.

In the image below, a Microsoft Word file is originally saved with the default format and the extension is .docx. The student uses the File menu, Save As command to bring up the dialog box to change the Format to Rich Text. When the Save button is clicked, the file extension will be .rtf.
